Guoxin Continuous Rotary Drum Carbonization Furnace test run for wood powder

Guoxin Continuous Rotary Drum Carbonization Furnace test run for wood powder

1. Background: The Challenge of Processing Biomass Fines

Processing fine wood powder (wood fines) in traditional batch kilns or vertical retorts often leads to inconsistent carbonization and high dust emissions. For industrial-scale biochar production, the requirement is a system that can handle high-surface-area materials while maintaining a stable oxygen-free environment. On January 7, 2026, Guoxin Group conducted a full-load test run of our Continuous Rotary Drum Carbonization Furnace to verify its performance on high-volume wood powder feedstock.

2. Technical Execution: Continuous Rotary Pyrolysis

During the test run, the wood powder was introduced into the furnace via an automated feeding system (as shown in the project site photos). The core objective was to achieve high-purity biochar without material bridging or uneven thermal decomposition.

  • Dynamic Material Agitation: The rotation of the drum ensures that the wood powder is constantly turned, exposing every particle to the controlled high-temperature zone. This dynamic movement is critical for fine powders to prevent the formation of “cold cores.”

  • Syngas Self-Sufficiency: Once the furnace reached the pyrolysis threshold, the combustible volatiles released from the wood powder were captured and recycled. This syngas provided the primary thermal energy for the burners, significantly reducing the reliance on external LPG/Natural Gas.

  • Precision Temperature Control: The PLC system maintained a stable internal environment (approx. 450°C – 550°C), ensuring the wood powder reached a fixed carbon content of >85% without over-calcination.

3. Results: Material Transformation

  • Before (Raw Wood Powder): Brown, low-density biomass with high volatile content.

  • After (Carbonized Biochar): Deep black, high-fixed-carbon powder with excellent structural integrity (no ash contamination).

  • Thermal Efficiency: The system achieved a stable continuous discharge, with the water-cooled screw conveyor bringing the biochar temperature down to $<40^\circ\text{C}$ for immediate safe handling.

4. Integrated Production Logic (Downstream Synergies)

The success of wood powder carbonization opens the door for high-value downstream processing. In a typical Guoxin turnkey plant, this carbonized powder is not the end product:

  • Forming Technology: These carbonized fines are ideal feedstock for our Hydraulic BBQ Charcoal Briquette Machines or Shisha Tablet Presses, where they are compacted into high-density retail products.

  • Upstream Preparation: If the raw wood powder exceeds 15% moisture, we recommend pre-processing through a Rotary Drum Dryer to ensure the thermal balance of the carbonization furnace is maintained.

FAQ

Q1: Why is the “Rotary Drum” design superior for powders compared to vertical furnaces?

A: Fine powders tend to compact or “channel” in vertical systems, leading to uneven gas flow and incomplete carbonization. The rotary action mechanically breaks up any clumps, ensuring a uniform mass-transfer and heat-transfer for every particle.

Q2: What is the risk of dust explosions when processing wood powder?

A: Our system operates under a strict oxygen-free (anaerobic) positive pressure environment. Combined with a precision-sealed feeding and discharge mechanism, the risk of combustion or explosion is effectively mitigated at the source.

Q3: Can this system handle wood powder with different wood species mixed?

A: Yes, provided the particle size and moisture content are relatively consistent. The PLC allows for adjustments in drum speed and residence time to compensate for different biomass densities.
